Ian Sturdy has been involved in music from a very early age, playing piano from ages 8 to 13. He then became interested in pipe band drumming in 1992 when he joined the Lord Selkirk Boy Scout Pipe Band in Winnipeg, Canada. He competed in the band as well as individually until the age of 18. In university, he played with the Canadian Scottish Regiment Pipes and Drums of Victoria, Canada, for 2 years before moving back to Winnipeg. He played with the Grade 3 St. Andrew’s Society of Winnipeg Pipe Band for several years. He also taught snare drumming to army cadets in the summers during University at the Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre. After a 15 year hiatus, he joined the Grade 3 Fountain Trust Pipe Band out of Covington, Indiana. After 2 years, he decided to join the City of Chicago Pipe Band in the fall of 2017. Outside of pipe band drumming, Ian enjoys being a dad and playing volleyball.
