Warren Mays was a U.S. Marine, a retired Deputy U.S. Marshal, and most recently retired from the U.S. Attorney General’s office. His first experience with pipe bands was attending a 1996 concert in Boise, Idaho, by the Pipes and Drums of the Black Watch. Later his son, Jared Mays, began playing snare with the Knoxville Pipes & Drums and Warren was recruited to be Drum Major for that band. Having little prior musical experience he began lessons on the bass drum in 2010 and by 2012 was playing in Knoxville’s Grade 4 band. In 2014 he set aside the bass to concentrate on Drum Major duties. During this time the U.S. Marshals Service formed a ceremonial pipe band and he became Drum Major for that band also, a position he still serves today as a retiree. Warren joined the City of Chicago Pipe Band as Drum Major in 2017 seeking new challenges and opportunities for which he travels from his home in Tennessee to lead the band on parade and into competitions.
